An aerial image of Mablethorpe beach showing the what3words artwork etched into the sand

It can be challenging when trying to describe your exact location when your environment is unfamiliar or is hard to define, like on a beach or near open water.

On 28 July 2021 what3words commissioned artwork on the sands of Mablethorpe beach to remind the public to download the free what3words app.

The artwork reminded the public that what3words has split the world into 3m x 3m squares, giving each square a three-word address.

We already have other means of locating a caller and dispatching a resource as soon as possible to ensure our patients get timely emergency care when they need us, however what3words is a great additional tool to use in the process of elimination to know the exact location.

For people who prefer the more traditional map reading methods then the Ordnance Survey produces maps with co-ordinates in both paper and online formats.

The UK Grid Reference Finder is also a great mapping tool. Simply input a postcode, location (address, road or town name), a what3words address and the system comes up with the Grid Reference.

For example, if you type in ’10 Downing Street, London’ you get the Grid Reference TQ 30046 79940.
