Several members from a life-saving community group in Nottingham have joined forces with the fire and rescue service to take part in a dramatic exercise.
Trent Community First Responders (CFR) met up with firefighters from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service on a Thursday night at West Bridgford Fire Station to act as casualties in a mocked-up road traffic collision involving a van, a car which had hit a pedestrian, and another car on its side.
CFRs are in schemes founded and run by volunteers who give up their spare time to attend appropriate emergency calls in their own community. They are dispatched by the EMAS Emergency Operations Centre.
The exercise tested the skills of the firefighters and two of the CFRs who were assigned to treat patients.
Two casualties were trapped in the car on its side and had to be cut out of the vehicle, while five people in the van pretended not to be able to speak any English and had sustained a variety of injuries.
Four people trapped in the back of the van also had to be cut out of the vehicle.
The exercise was very successful and the CFRs and fire service hope to hold similar training evenings in the future.
