An EMAS staff member has taken part in a humanitarian mission to support those affected by the war in Ukraine.
Sally-Anne Marson, People Business Partner for Northamptonshire Division at East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS), formed part of the first all-female humanitarian aid convoy delivering critical medical supplies and equipment to Ukraine with the Ukrainian Action Charity.
Sally, from Nottingham, joined the team heading to Poland after being asked by her long-time friend Tracey to join her on the convoy. The pair joined a team of women from diverse backgrounds united in their desire to help those in need.
The convoy, made up of fifteen women in five aid packed 4 x 4 vehicles, set off on Friday 14 February and travelled over 1000 miles through France, Belgium and Germany before arriving in Poland on 16 February. From there, the vehicles and supplies were handed over, ready to be moved on to Ukraine. This marked the 69th successful convoy completed by the charity and the first to be led entirely by women.
Sally said:
"It was really important to me to push myself out of my comfort zone and try something completely new.
"I’d never driven abroad before and suddenly I found myself behind the wheel of a used pickup truck carrying essential supplies through Europe. It was a real baptism of fire."
Sally took on the role of deputy team leader during the journey and said the experience had a significant impact on her both personally and professionally.
"It was incredibly emotional at times. The Ukrainian people were so sincere and grateful. At least one vehicle was going to be used as an ambulance when it arrived at its destination which made the journey even more special. It really made everything we went through worthwhile. I came away from it feeling stronger, more resilient and with a completely new perspective. I’d absolutely do it again."
The convoy brought together women from a range of backgrounds, each with different life experiences but a shared goal. Sally said the bonds formed during the journey were unforgettable.
"Being part of this all-female team was so powerful. We supported each other through the challenges and I think we all came back as better people for it."
Sally’s family, friends and colleagues at EMAS have expressed pride in her achievement, celebrating her commitment to making a difference in the lives of others
