Big congratulations are in order for two of our Derbyshire ambulance technicians who have each won a national award for being ‘exceptional’.

Adam Byard and Simon Bailey, who respond on our ambulance frontline have been awarded the ‘Exceptional Service in a Clinical Role’ award by the Ambulance Leadership Forum (ALF), following a nomination by the Derbyshire division’s Reducing Conveyance team.

Adam, based at Ilkeston Station and Simon from Long Eaton Station were nominated for going above and beyond to lead change for the benefit of our patients, by utilising alternative options to hospital emergency departments during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pair were part of the initial cohort of staff who put themselves forward to join the Alternative Pathways Ambassador Network in Derbyshire, first developed in 2020. The group strives to encourage colleagues to seek alternative care pathways for their patients, and also lead by example when out responding to emergencies.

However, Adam and Simon stood out as they took every opportunity to not only further their personal development, but the development of the network by attending trust-wide pathway working groups, working directly with system partners such as Urgent Treatment Centres to break down barriers and develop  new pathways, and work with ambulance colleagues to improve communications and solve problems.

Tom Rollinson, Derbyshire Reducing Conveyance Lead, said:

“Adam and Simon have both provided an invaluable contribution to all our patients and not only promoting a change in culture in both their stations, but also the wider Derbyshire region.”

Tim Slater, General Manager for Derbyshire said:

“I want to take this opportunity to congratulate both Adam and Simon on their award and thank them for the work which led to this.

“Both have acted as role models for ambulance technicians and have positively supported our reducing conveyance and pathway development programme.

“They were also founding members of our Derbyshire Alternative Pathway Ambassador Network, promoting their work across their teams and colleagues.

“Thank you both and well done on your awards.”
