Four ambulance crew members from Grimsby Ambulance Station have been shortlisted for the Grimsby Telegraph Awards, Emergency Services Team of the Year for their dedication to the community they serve.
Wayne Maddison, Simon Shingler, Sean Jacklin and Nick Stuffin all volunteer for LIVES (Lincolnshire Integrated Voluntary Emergency Services) in their spare time, after spending their days working as technicians and paramedics for EMAS.
As part of LIVES, they respond to 999 calls in their community in their own time and are passionate about the care they deliver to patients.
In addition, the team attend clinical lectures in their own time to develop their clinical skills and regularly sign up for research and trials.
EMAS are one of the top ambulance services in the country for their research into study trials, but this requires dedication from our frontline staff.
Nick is one of our technicians enrolled on our Hypo 2 trial which compares two enhanced care pathways for patients having a hypoglycemic event.
Wayne was enrolled on our Sepsis Trail, and so was trained to administer antibiotics prior to hospital admission. Due to the success of this pilot all Lincolnshire paramedics will now receive training to administer antibiotics before hospital admission. With septic shock, the sooner antibiotics can begin working on the infection, the greater the chances of the patient surviving. When a person is in septic shock, their chance of survival decreases by 7.6 per cent for every hour an IV antibiotic is not given.
Wayne, Sean, Nick and Simon have also recently developed Continuous Professional Development sessions for their colleagues at Grimsby Station and have transformed the upstairs room of the building into a training room where staff can practice and refresh their skills. This transformation has been done in their personal time and with their own money.
Nick Stuffin, Technician said: “We are all proud and humbled to have been nominated and shortlisted for this award. “
Simon Shingler added: “We love our jobs!”
The Grimsby Telegraph said: “"It’s important to take time out to praise people who go above and beyond the norm. These awards are a fantastic way of recognising the extra effort that people put in to improve our way of life.
"We’re looking for enthusiastic people who will make a real difference to our community."
The awards evening will be held on Thursday 23 November at the Oakland’s Hotel, Grimsby.
