Dan Ball has been a Fleet Team Leader for Lincolnshire for five years. He was an apprentice mechanic prior to joining EMAS.

Dan’s role at EMAS

"What me and my team do saves lives indirectly – I know it sounds a bit cliché. We maintain vehicles to a high standard. We also maintain the equipment on the vehicles. Sometimes we even hand the keys straight over to the crews who go out and use that vehicle operationally."

Along with his love for cars, what motivates him the most is being able to work with a talented and diverse team who care about each other.

Although Dan is still a qualified mechanic, his day-to-day job has changed since becoming a Team Leader. He looks after day-to-day administration, distributes jobs, ensures that all the vehicles are MOT'd, serviced, and taken for necessary repairs. He also supports his team in the workshop.

Dan enjoys the variety of his role, and reflects that the biggest challenge is prioritising vehicle repairs.

"We might have a few VOR's (Vehicles Off Road) in the morning, which means the vehicles are unavailable or broken. We've got to stop what we're doing, look at the bigger picture, and move our resources to the team or area that needs it the most."

EMAS colleagues know the value that Dan and the Fleet team bring. They often receive recognition for their efforts and hard work. This makes Dan and the rest of the team proud and motivates them to keep doing a great job.

"We get messages regularly from senior members of staff saying their team couldn't do their job without us, which is just very heart warming. It just shows that we are a very small cog in a big gearbox but, without us, the gearbox wouldn't drive."

You don't have to be clinically-trained to help save lives across the East Midlands. The Fleet team is responsible for ensuring that all of EMAS's life-saving vehicles and equipment are safe, efficient, and effective.

"In the NHS and at EMAS, there are lots of jobs like mine that go on behind the scenes that people don't always think about.”
