Northamptonshire Paramedic Sam Sears has once again stepped up to help those in need by heading to Turkey to support the humanitarian effort and aid the country’s emergency services after the devastating earthquakes there.
Earlier last year, Sam an EMAS Tactical Commander and Paramedic based at Kettering Ambulance Station, went over to Ukraine to help following the crises in the country.
Sam, from Sudborough, Northamptonshire, left the UK on 21 March 2023 to spend four weeks with charity UK Med; the frontline medical aid charity who provide support to countries hit by crises or disasters.
Sam has been a volunteer with UK Med since 2012 and prior to his journey to Turkey and Ukraine, was previously deployed with the charity to Sierra Leone during the Ebola pandemic.
As with his journey to Ukraine, the main focus for Sam has been providing as much help on the ground as he possibly can.
“Since I have arrived, I have been based in Turkoglu, a town approximately 30kms from the earthquake epicentre.
“Working alongside other volunteers for UK Med, we have been carrying out mobile clinics to help the hundreds of women, men and children in need in the more remote villages and towns, offering healthcare to those who need it within those communities."
Sam will return to the UK on 13 April 2023 to his family, friends and colleagues at EMAS, who, he says have been incredibly supportive in his journey to helping others.
“I am so thankful for my colleagues at EMAS, stepping up to help where needed while I am away, allowing my release which is paramount in enabling humanitarian relief in these kinds of disasters.
“EMAS’ support in these situations has been imperative and I am incredibly grateful for that."
Michael Jones, EMAS Divisional Director for Northamptonshire, said: "I am delighted that with the help of Sam’s colleagues we were able to release Sam and support this truly worthy cause."
